So, you’re planning a trip to Paris in January? Winter in Paris is one of my favorite times to visit. There are fewer tourists and a more cozy vibe of wandering the city all bundled up.
Whether strolling along the Seine, relaxing in my favorite place the Tuileries Garden, exploring museums, warming up at cafes ( grab a chocolat chaud from Angelina), or just wandering the city, Paris in January is magical!
But let’s be real: Figuring out what to pack for Paris in January can feel overwhelming. It’s cold and often rainy. Packing for Paris in January doesn’t have to be stressful or overwhelming. (The key is layering!) This guide will walk you through exactly what to pack for Paris! I’ll share Paris outfit ideas for January that will keep you looking chic while braving the chilly January weather.
What’s the Weather Like in Paris in January?
January in Paris is chilly. Temperatures average between 36°F (2°C) and 46°F (8°C), but with wind and rain, it can feel much colder.
Snow is rare, but rain is common, so pack accordingly.
You’ll be moving between the cold outdoors and heated cafés, shops, and museums, so having removable layers is key to staying comfortable. I will tell you how to dress warmly to enjoy the city’s winter charm! Because nothing is worse than being cold and wet when trying to sightsee!
Paris Packing List for January: The Essentials
Regarding what I pack for Paris in January, I focus on key pieces that are versatile, stylish, and functional. Here’s what you need to bring:
A Long Waterproof Puffer Jacket
Your coat will be the star of the show this month as it will be in ALL your photos. I suggest a long waterproof puffer jacket (my favorite is Canada Goose) that’s both warm and waterproof. I always opt for black. But if you want to add a pop of color try green or tan! A belted puffer can add a tailored look while still being practical.
A Blazer
If you plan on going out to dinner or shows, I love wearing a blazer under my coat for a more polished look when indoors! Wear it over a turtleneck during the day for museum visits, or pair it with trousers for a polished dinner look. To me it is one of those pieces that makes any outfit feel instantly more stylish.
Warm Layers
Layers are the secret weapon for surviving Paris in January without looking bulky. Here’s what to pack:
• Thermal Base Layers: Thin thermal tops and leggings are lifesavers for keeping warm without adding bulk. Brands like Uniqlo’s Heattech or 32 Degrees are my go-to.
• Knit Sweaters: Wool or cashmere sweaters are warm, lightweight, and perfect for layering. I like to bring 2 to 3 sweaters, 2 neutrals, and 1 bold color or design!.
• Thermal Tights: These are a game-changer for wearing dresses or skirts in winter. Fleece-lined options add an extra layer of warmth under jeans or trousers on super chilly days.
Straight-Leg Jeans and Tailored Trousers
Skinny jeans are not practical for layering. Straight-leg or wide-leg jeans are much more practical for layering. Pair them with a chunky knit sweater for a casual look or dress them up with a blazer. Tailored trousers are another great option and perfect for day-to-night wear.
With that being said, I also bring a few pair of leggings or sweatpants to wear when grabbing breakfast or in the evening! Comfy cozy pants are not to be left at home!
Leather Riding Boots (Not Suede!)
When deciding what shoes to wear for Paris in January, leather riding boots are my go-to. They’re comfortable for walking all day, can be worn day or night, and handle rainy weather far better than suede. Just make sure your pair is COMFORTABLE!
I also love Chelsea boots or weatherproof leather sneakers are great alternatives. Don’t forget the wool socks!
Accessories That Elevate Your Look
Parisian style is all about details. Accessories will make your outfits feel complete. Here’s what I bring:
• Oversized Scarf: A big, cozy scarf is essential for winter in Paris. It adds warmth and makes any outfit look instantly more stylish. It also keeps the wind off your face on those super windy days!
• Beanie: A classic beanie keeps you warm and adds a touch of casual Parisian charm. Or go for a French Beret
• Fleece Lined Leather Gloves: These aren’t just practical, they’re an easy way to make your outfit feel polished and still work with your cellphone for pictures!
• Crossbody Belt Bag or Leather Bag: Crossbody belt bags are perfect as you can be hands-free! I love a Lulu belt bag or a small classic leather bag.
• Travel Umbrella: Be prepared for January rain! A small lightweight, travel-friendly umbrella is a must.
Travel Outfit
Especially in the winter months, I love having a comfortable yet warm travel outfit, perfect for wearing on long flights, but equally as warm under a jacket to travel to your destination! I think a travel outfit also doubles as an outfit to throw on if running to the store or to grab breakfast before getting ready for the day!

Weather Packing Tips for Paris in January
Paris in January can be unpredictable. With rain, wind, snow, or sunny skies. Knowing how to pack for different weather conditions will ensure you’re prepared no matter what. Here’s how to adjust your outfits for typical January weather in Paris:
If It’s Cold and Clear….
On crisp, sunny winter days, you’ll want to layer for warmth while keeping your look stylish. A turtleneck sweater under a wool coat works perfectly. Pair this with jeans or trousers and ankle boots. Add a scarf, gloves, and a chic beret for that extra Parisian touch. Don’t forget sunglasses, the winter sun can be surprisingly bright!
If It’s Rainy….
When rain is in the forecast, a waterproof trench coat or puffer jacket is your best friend. Layer it over a cozy sweater and pair it with black jeans or fleece-lined leggings. Waterproof ankle boots or sleek trainers will keep your feet dry and comfortable as you navigate wet streets. Bring a compact, windproof umbrella to shield you from the drizzle without feeling cumbersome.
If It’s Windy or Extra Chilly….
For those days when the icy wind picks up, you’ll need to bundle up. Wear a thermal base layer under a chunky knit sweater or a heated vest and top it with a puffer jacket or long wool coat. Add a thick scarf, wool hat, and insulated gloves. Opt for fleece-lined leggings or jeans and finish with tall boots for extra protection from the elements. Also I swear by these electric hand warmers!
What Not to Wear in Paris in January and Tips for Packing for Paris in January
1. Don’t Overpack: Stick to versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched, it is all about mixing the layers you bring with you! I like to bring 3 sweaters, 1 long puffer jacket, blazer, sweater dress, black jeans, trousers and some base layers, and button down shirt!
2. Check the Weather Forecast: Paris weather can be unpredictable, so check the forecast before you leave and adjust your packing list accordingly. This tip helps you know what to expect and will let you pack accordingly! If it is rainy every day perhaps bring a pair of rain boots instead of leather boots!
3. Don’t pack Chunky Layers : I always opt to only bring one chunky sweater as they often take up so much space in your luggage and instead opt to prioritize layering pieces that are thinner and easier to style under your coats!
4. Leave Suede at Home: suede is not suited to the rainy and wet January weather in Paris, instead opt for leather or waterproof rain boots!
5. Leave the High heels at home: unless you have a night out planned, I opt to go for a heeled boot instead which is much easier to navigate the cobblestone streets and winter weather.
Final Thoughts
Packing for Paris in January doesn’t have to be a headache. With the right mix of warm layers, staple pieces, and accessories you can easily put together your outfits for visiting the Eiffel Tower, getting lost in the Marais, or sipping wine or chocolate chaud in a cozy café!
