Traveling to picturesque and exotic locations often conjures up images of long-haul flights and complex visa arrangements. However, if you’re a US citizen yearning for a tropical getaway or a scenic escape, there are a myriad of destinations that require no passport at all.
Some of my favorite places to travel without a USA passport are Dry Tortugas National Park, Puerto Rico and Northern Mariana Islands.
From the turquoise waters of the Caribbean to the rugged coastlines of the Pacific, there are numerous islands USA citizens can visit without a passport.
Here’s a list of some of my favorite exotic locations, some I have visited and some are bucket list locations I haven’t visited yet. They are all perfect for a special getaway.

St. Croix, US Virgin Islands
I haven’t yet visited the US Virgin Islands but they are high on my list. Part of the US Virgin Islands, St. Croix offers stunning beaches, historical landmarks, and vibrant culture.
While here make sure you explore the charming towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted, try the local cuisine, and go snorkeling. The place is perfect for a relaxing tropical vacation.
The island is home to the beautiful Buck Island Reef National Monument, which offers incredible snorkeling and underwater trails. St. Croix also boasts spectacular bioluminescent bays that light up the night. If you have never seen one of these believe me they are incredible.
Getting to St. Croix is simple with direct flights available from several major U.S. cities. Once there, you can easily get around by rental car or local taxis.
Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida
I absolutely love this national park it’s so incredible interesting and beautiful. If you can arrive by seaplane it’s an experience I won’t forget.
Located in Florida, 70 miles from Key West this remote island is accessible only by ferry, boat or seaplane. It’s known for its historic Fort Jefferson, pristine beaches, and vibrant coral reefs, ideal for swimming and diving.
Dry Tortugas National Park offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The park is composed of seven small islands, each boasting turquoise waters and a diverse array of marine life.
One of the highlights for me here is the opportunity to snorkel among the coral reefs, the sea life is incredible vibrant.
You can also camp here for an adventurous experience but you will need to be prepared as there is very little in terms of amenities here.

Catalina Island, California
As I’m writing this I’m reminded how I need to explore the west coast of the USA a little more. Catalina Island will be one of the first places I visit.
Off the coast of California, Catalina Island has a charming small-town vibe, mixed with incredible scenery and a vibe that is hard to beat. Hike its rugged terrains, relax on its serene beaches, or explore the quaint town of Avalon.
The island is located just a short ferry ride from mainland California, and is a perfect escape for those seeking adventure and relaxation. Things to do here include snorkeling in the clear waters, zip line through the Descanso Canyon, or rent a golf cart to explore the island at your own pace.
Just 22 miles off the Southern California coast, Catalina Island feels like a world away. It’s ideal for anyone seeking one of the best vacations without a passport. You can get there by ferry from several ports in Southern California or take a helicopter for a quick and unforgettable trip.
Guam, Western Pacific
Situated in the Western Pacific, Guam is a US territory known for its rich history, beautiful beaches, and Chamorro culture. I have never been but people who have have told me it’s so scenic.
Must-visit locations include Two Lovers Point, Ritidian Point and the numerous war memorials like the War in the Pacific National Historical Park. Here, you can learn about the island’s significant role during the war through preserved battlefields, relics, and informative exhibits.
Nature lovers can explore the stunning landscapes of the island’s southern region, boasting waterfalls, caves, and lush greenery. Those who want a little more adventure can hike the rugged terrain of Mount Lamlam, known as the world’s tallest peak from the base (under the sea) to the summit.
Direct flights from the U.S. mainland are available, and no passport is needed for American citizens.
St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands
St. John is renowned for its natural beauty and tranquility. It is the smallest of the US Virgin Island.

The Annaberg mill ruins and the sugar-plantation ruins in the Virgin Islands National Park and Franic Beach are all must sees. It’s a great destination for warm places to travel without a passport.
It isn’t as easy to get to as some of the other U.S. Virgin Island as it has no airport. Must arrive via a ferry from St Thomas on on a cruise ship. In my opinion it is worth that little extra work though and when the cruise ships leave tends to be a little quieter than some of the other islands.
Oahu, Hawaii
One of the American islands many of us are more familiar with the Hawaiian Islands are for most a bucket list vacations.
Oahu, known as “The Gathering Place,” is home to iconic spots like Waikiki Beach and the historic Pearl Harbor. With a perfect mix of urban excitement and tropical beauty, it’s ideal for family vacations, honeymoons, or adventurous getaways.
Some of my must see things here are the Plumeria farm on the North Shore, the Bishop Museum is great if you love history. The Diamond Head State Monument, a dormant volcano crater has stunning coastal views and the Kualoa Ranch, a 4,000-acre nature reserve is impressive..
Direct flights from many U.S. cities make it easy to reach. I haven’t been here but hopefully I will get to visit soon.
Anna Maria Island, Florida
Another one of the Florida islands that I have visited often. This charming island on Florida’s Gulf Coast is known for its laid-back vibe, pristine beaches, and quaint shops.
If you looking for a relaxed beach vacation without a passport, this is the island for you. Some of the things to do here are kayaking, hiking, and watersports. Don’t miss the sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico, they are perfect here.
The island is accessible via bridges from mainland Florida, it’s a really straightforward trip. I adore Anna Maria there is so much to do here and it is one of the most beautiful places in Florida.

St. Thomas combines rich history with natural beauty. Must do things here are a visit to the historic 99 Steps, Drake’s Seat for panoramic views, and the bustling town of Charlotte Amalie. Magens Bay Beach, Sapphire Beach and Honeymoon Beach are among some of the best beaches on the island.
St Thomas is perfect for those looking for one of the Caribbean islands with no passport needed. St Thomas has everything you need but tends to be a little quieter than St Croix.

Outer Banks, North Carolina
I have to admit I have never been here but it is on my long list.
The Outer Banks are a chain of barrier islands along the North Carolina coast, stretching from the Virginia border to Cape Lookout. The area is approximately 175 miles long.
The islands are divided into three regions: the Northern Beaches, Roanoke Island and Hatteras Island, and Ocracoke Island. Each region has its own unique charm and attractions.
Roanoke Island and Hatteras Island are my must visit areas and Ocracoke Island is the place to go if you want somewhere much quieter.
The Outer Banks offer a diverse range of activities including water sports, fishing, and exploring historical sites like the Wright Brothers National Memorial. Known for its expansive beaches and charming villages, it’s accessible by car and short flights, making it a top spot for the best vacations without a passport.
Puerto Rico
With its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning beaches, Puerto Rico is a favorite for many. The colorful streets of Old San Juan look amazing, and let’s not forget the bioluminescent bay, Mosquito Bay, and the beautiful beaches.
Puerto Rico is home to the only tropical rainforest in the United States, El Yunque National Forest which you must visit. The island has a vibrant cultural scene, with a mix of Spanish, African, and indigenous influences. I can’t wait to visit.

Another Florida Island that I an highly recommend you visit.
Bahia Honda Key is an island in the lower Florida Keys, known for its extensive sandy beaches, deep waters, and exceptional swimming and snorkeling opportunities. The island is virtually uninhabited, with the 524-acre Bahia Honda State Park being the main attraction.
Calusa Beach is the best beach in my opinion some of the others can be a little rocky.
It’s one of the warm places to travel without a passport that offers a tranquil escape. During peak season it can get more crowded so if you can visit off season.
Accessible by car from Miami or Key West. It’s best I think to stay on one of the other keys and drive here for a day trip.

Mackinac Island, Michigan
My mum has visited here often. She grew up in the Midwest and this is one of her favorite places.
Mackinac Island is a charming and historic island located between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan, USA. With no cars allowed, the island is a haven for those seeking a tranquil and peaceful retreat.
The island is home to over 70 miles of hiking and biking trails, offering breathtaking views of Lake Huron and the surrounding landscape.
Access to the the land by is by ferry from Mackinaw City or St. Ignace, with several ferry companies offering daily departures. Or you can charter a private boat.
You must try the fudge when you are here it’s famous for it. Fort Mackinac and the Arch Rock are also must visits.

Kauai, Hawaii

Beach lovers should head to Poipu Beach is perfect for snorkeling and sunbathing, while Hanalei Bay’s crescent-shaped beach is ideal for surfing and relaxing.
Getting to Kauai is straightforward. There are direct flights to Lihue Airport (LIH) from various mainland cities in the USA. Once you arrive, renting a car is the best way to explore the island’s many attractions at your own pace.

Located just off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico, Culebra offers some of the best beach vacations without a passport. The Culebra National Wildlife Refuge covers over 1,400 acres and is wonderful for nature lovers.
Flamenco Beach is consistently rated as one of the world’s top beaches, with its powdery white sand and clear turquoise waters. The island is also home to vibrant coral reefs, making it a paradise for snorkelers and scuba divers.
Getting here is straightforward. You can take a short flight from San Juan International Airport, which takes about 30 minutes, or you can opt for a scenic ferry ride from the town of Ceiba on Puerto Rico’s main island.

Northern Mariana Islands
The Northern Mariana Islands are 14 islands and islets in the western Pacific Ocean. Guam is the southern most of these island and a separate territory. They are about 2,400 km south of Japan.
Only five of the islands are populated with Saipan been the largest and most populated. The islands’ history is deeply intertwined with the events of World War II, making it a fascinating destination for history buffs and casual explorers alike.
Saipan is a breathtaking island with incredible views, impressive cliffs and the Grotto offers a unique diving experience. You can also explore serene beaches, lush jungles, and even volcanic peaks on Tinian and Rota islands.
Getting here is a little more complicated with flights leaving from Guam or Honolulu. It’s a wonderful place if you fancy a little bit more of a journey.
