One of my favorite months to visit Europe is May! No two countries in Europe offer the same springtime experience, but they are all spectacular! This list will share the best places to visit in Europe in May including Brussels, the French Riviera, and even Iceland!
Since May is towards the end of the spring, you’ll get some absolutely beautiful European weather. Plus, May is still the ‘low’ season in several beautiful European cities. That means some of the most popular European destinations are a little bit more budget-friendly to visit in May.

The Greek Isles
Average temperatures and precipitation: an average low of 58°F to an average high temperature of 77°F (14°C to 25°C), 12 hours of sunshine, and just three rainy days.
If you’re looking for a sunny warm vacation destination to break the doldrums of the winter months, then you’ll love the Greek Isles. May in the Greek Isles is perfect for those who love the sun and warm weather – but aren’t looking for the more typical scorching heat the Greek Isles are known for.
Instead, you’ll be greeted with perfect temperatures. The Greek Isles easily have some of the best may weather in Europe! You also won’t be fighting as many crowds if you decide to visit the Greek Isles in May.
Peak tourist season in Greece is typically from June to September or October. You’ll still experience some crowds, looking for sunny weather. But it won’t be as crowded as it is during the peak tourist season!

The French Riviera
Average temperatures and precipitation: The average temperature in French Riviera in May is 61°F (16°C) and the the average minimum temperature in French Riviera in May is 53°F (12°C). But some days you can get temperatures up to 69°F (21°C)! There is also very little rain in the French Riviera in May, in fact, there are on average 300 days of sun there!
On the French Mediterranean coast is the famous French Riviera. In the French Riviera you’ll find some of the most famous beach resorts and beach towns in Europe. European beaches in May, especially in the French Riviera, a warm and sunny during the day and cooler at night.
So it’s a perfect option if you want to spend your days in the sun, but want to avoid the scorching heat of the summer months in the Mediterranean. Because the temperatures are still fairly mild for the region, you won’t have to deal with the typical summer crowds.
It will still be crowded, simply because it’s one of best places to visit in Europe in May. But the crowds will be much smaller compared to the summer crowds from June to September. Depending on when you visit in May, you may even get to see the wild poppies start to sprout and bloom in the region!

A few of the warmer afternoons, especially near the end of May can even get into the mid-70s°F (23-24°C). May is typically sunny, but you can expect an average of 12 days with some rainfall during the month.
Easily one of the best European cities to visit in May is Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. It’s one of the most popular times of the year to visit the city, thanks to it’s mild sunny weather. After a long winter, Amsterdam bursts into color in May.
Because of the mild weather, you’ll find tons of festivals and music events to attend in the city. But, keep in mind, that May is one of the busiest months to visit Amsterdam. So if you’re looking to escape the crowds, this may not be the best option.
However, if you are looking to experience Amsterdam vibrating with energy, full of colorful blooms, and warm days, visit in May! There’s never a bad time to visit Amsterdam, but when you visit in May, you’ll quickly see just why it’s so popular.
Iceland
Average temperatures and precipitation: Average temperatures in Iceland in May range from 36°F (2°C) to 53°F (11°C). The worst of the winter months have passed, but you can still expect the days to be chilly. Despite the chilly temperatures, the weather is typically fairly sunny. But the chance of rain and windy weather is always a possibility in Iceland, no matter when you visit!
It’s no secret that one of my absolute favorite countries to visit is Iceland! I’ve been over 6 times and have experienced most of the major ‘seasons’ the island country has to offer. Iceland in the spring is epic! It’s also no secret that Iceland can be a pretty pricey vacation destination.
Although Iceland isn’t one of the cheapest European countries in May, you will still get really good savings because high season is June to August. So visiting in May is slightly cheaper, and you’ll still have a good chance of having pleasant weather! May is also the month with the lowest average rainfall in Iceland.
In May, the flowers are starting to bloom and the grassy fields are starting to change to a bright green. You may even get to see one of my favorite sites in Iceland – the epic lupine fields – if you visit in late May! Andalusia, Spain
Average temperatures and precipitation: Around May 1, the average temperature in Andalusia is around 57°F (14°C), with highs at 71°F (22°C) and lows at 46°F (8°C). But, by the end of the month, averages jump up to 62°F (17°C), with highs up to 80°F (27°C) and lows drop down to only 53°F (12°C). May is also very sunny with little to no rain!
One of the hottest places in Europe in May is the stunning region of Andalusia, Spain. Andalusia is a region in southern Spain that is known for it’s warm weather, sunny days, and unique culture. Because of it’s location, the region has been influenced by many different cultures.
You’ll find classic Spanish architecture right next classic Islamic architecture. This is from the time when the area was under Moorish (Islamic) rule, from the 8th century all the way into the 15th century. This unique blend of cultures is one of my favorite things about the region.
I also love the beautiful gardens that start to come to life in May. Many of them are in centuries old castles, villages, and towns. Throughout the region in May, almond and cherry blossoms start to bloom. So the entire region is full of fragrant blossoms and endless sunny weather. Prague, Czechia
Average temperatures and precipitation: There’s quite a lot of rain throughout the month, so make sure to pack an umbrella and keep an eye on the forecast. Temperatures range from the mid-40s°F to the high-50s°F (6°C to 14°C) throughout May. But, towards the end of the month, you can expect highs around 68°F (20°C).
Prague is one of the best places to travel in May in Europe. Locals call this time of year in the city the Praha Spring. The city bursts into color thanks to the white, purple, pink, and yellow blooms. During the day, the temperature is comfortable. So you’ll have no problems walking around and exploring all day.
One of the reasons I love visiting Prague in May is because it’s the last warm month of the year that is fairly quiet. You won’t encounter a ton of crowds during this time of the year in Prague. Instead, most tourists come to the city in the summer, when the weather is more predictable.
May in Prague is also the start of the festival season. There are festivals for just about anything. From wine and beer to jazz and contemporary music. If you’re okay with grey skies and a slight chill in the air, then I think you’ll love exploring Prague in May!
The Dalmatian Coast, Croatia
Average temperatures and precipitation: On the Dalmatian Coast in May, the average air temperature ranges from 74 °F (23 °C) during the day to 57 °F (14 °C) at night. There are typically around 8 days of rain on average, where the rainfall is around 2.18 in (55mm). With hardly any rain, you can expect warm sunny days on the Dalmatian Coast in May!
The Dalmatian Coast, in Croatia, is known for its Mediterranean-like climate. Because of that, it has some of the best May weather in Europe! I suggest taking advantage of the beautiful weather and spending your days outside exploring.
The region is home to several parks and nature preserves with excellent hiking trails. It also has a wide range of landscapes. From rugged mountains to a beautiful coastline. If you are looking for a more adventurous vacation, the Dalmatian Coast is perfect.
I highly suggest you go one of the region’s guided rafting or canyoning tours if you have a chance. It’s a really cool way to explore the region – and you’ll have tons of fun! If that’s not your speed, don’t worry. The area is also home to beautiful, quiet, beaches where you can relax all day long.
Cinque Terre, Italy
Average temperatures and precipitation: daytime highs get up to 72°F (about 22°C) and at night, the temperatures only drop down to 57°F (around 14°C). In May, rainstorms are very rare in Cinque Terre, so you’ll almost always have sunny weather!
Cinque Terre is a string of seaside villages along the Italian Riviera coastline. There are just five small towns in the region. And each of them are full of bright colorful buildings nestled and carved into the rugged Italian coastline. You’ll also find plenty of vineyards, fresh seafood, and the region’s most popular food – pesto!
The days are beautiful and sunny, while not being scorching hot. So you can enjoy hiking in the rugged region, where you’ll enjoy panoramic sea views. You can also try your hand at fishing, tour the vineyards, or just relax in your own colorful villa.
Because it’s still considered the ‘low’ season, you won’t encounter too many crowds. This, along with the beautiful weather and stunning views, makes Cinque Terre one best places to travel in May in Europe!
Budapest, Hungary
Average temperatures and precipitation: Budapest in May is fairly warm, with high temperatures that tend to average near 66-68°F (19-20°C) early in May, warming to 73-74°F (23°C) near the end of the month. A few of the warmer afternoons, especially near the end of the month, can reach up near 84°F (29°C)! However, it is one of the wettest months of the year in Budapest, with an average of 14 days of rain in May.
It’s had many names throughout history, but today it’s known as Budapest. Budapest is a European city that is truly ancient. In fact, it was first established as a Roman colony – in 14 BC! It’s a city that is brimming with history, which is one of my favorite things about it.
So many different cultures come together to create a truly unique atmosphere. This, along with the mild weather, makes it one of best places to travel to in May in Europe. It’s also a very budget-friendly destination since May in Budapest is the ‘off-season’. That means you’ll avoid most of the crowds when you’re exploring.
Despite it being ‘off-season’, there are tons of cool festivals happening in Budapest in May. There is the Rosalia Festival, the Budapest 100, and the Budapest Beer Festival all happening in May, just to name a few! Lofoten Islands, Norway
Average temperatures and precipitation: The average temperature in the Lofoten Islands in May ranges from from a high of 45°F (7°C) to a low of 41°F (5°C). It’s still fairly chilly and one of the wettest months of the year. There is always the possibility of snow in the Lofoten Islands, all the way into June.
For those who are already living in a warm climate, I suggest heading to the Lofoten Islands in Norway. It’s the perfect place to get a break from the heat and experience chilly days in a beautifully green country. If you’re lucky, you may even get some snow!
The Lofoten Islands is perfect for travelers who like outdoor adventures. That’s because the islands are full of outdoor attractions like hiking trails and ski slopes. You can also go sailing or even try your hand at fishing. If you’re really lucky, you might get a glimpse of the Northern Lights!
Visiting the Lofoten Islands in May means visiting in the ‘off season’. There are hardly any crowds in May, but the islands are starting to come back to life after the long winter. So if you want to avoid the crowds, but still get to enjoy all that the Lofoten Islands have to offer, I think you’ll love visiting in May.
Vienna, Austria
Average temperatures and precipitation: The temperature in Vienna in May is generally mild. With highs ranging from 64°F to 71°F (14-21°C), and lows ranging from 46°F to 53°F (7-11°C). Throughout May, you can expect brief rain showers, so I suggest packing an umbrella or a raincoat – but they pass pretty quickly!
Vienna, Austria is easily one of the best places to visit in Europe in May. In fact, April – May and September – October are the ‘peak’ tourist seasons for the city. That’s because Vienna in May is bursting with life and color. But the weather is still pleasant and not overly hot.
In the many ornate gardens you’ll find colorful blooms with a backdrop of some of the most epic Baroque architecture in Europe! Vienna in May is nothing short of magical. Many of the restaurants start opening up their patios. So you can enjoy a famous Viennese coffee and Sacher Torte in the sunshine.
I also suggest booking a ticket to eat Brunch at the Café Gloriette. The Café Gloriette is on the grounds of the Schonbrunn Palace, overlooking the gardens. Its an extremely popular thing to do in Vienna, especially in April and May. So make sure you book tickets way ahead of time!
London, England
Average temperatures and precipitation: The average high temperatures during the day are typically in the low-60s°F (16-17°C) early in the month. But by the end of the month, it warms up a little bit, with highs in the mid-high 60s°F (20°C). It’s also classically British weather, with 54% of the days on average being overcast and rain showers are frequent.
If you’re planning to visit London, anytime of the year, you should expect some rain. That’s especially true in May. But I don’t think that should stop you from visiting London in May! In fact, London in May is often beautiful. The trees are starting to bloom and the weather is fairly mild, rain or no rain.
It’s also at the very beginning of London’s busiest time of year for tourism. But that means you’ll miss some of the larger crowds that arrive in the summer months. Part of this is because May has a ‘bank holiday’ and it’s the school half-term holiday. So many UK locals also take to the city for a quick break.
While you’re in London in May, you can attend the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, see a show at the Regents Park Open Air Theater, or experience the State Opening of Parliaments. May is a time where you’ll get to see plenty of pomp and circumstance happening in London, which is always a ton of fun.
Malta
Average temperatures and precipitation: The temperature in Malta in May is often lovely and warm. The average temperatures range from a low of 59°F (15°C) and a high of 73°F (23°C). With the warmer weather, sea temperatures are typically around 65°F (18°C). Most days are sunny and warm, with very little rain.
One of the best May beach vacations in Europe can be found on the beautiful island of Malta. The weather in Malta is absolutely perfect in May. Not too hot, and not too cold. Which is perfect for spending all day outside exploring the island’s many wonders. It’s also right before the ‘peak’ tourist season for the small island country.
In May, the island is probably it’s most beautiful. Thanks to the prior wet spring months, the rolling hills are bright green and flowers are starting to bloom. You won’t find the dry dusty streets you typically find in the summer months. The whole island feels like it’s alive.
The water may be a little cold for swimming. But the coast is still beautiful and perfect for hiking in May, and you can still do snorkeling and scuba diving tours. I highly suggest visiting this often forgotten Mediterranean island.
Krakow, Poland
Average temperatures and precipitation: The temperature in Krakow, Poland in May typically ranges from a low of 51°F (10°C) and a high of 69°F (20°C). You can expect some rain when you visit Krakow in May, but not too much. On average, it rains around 2-3 inches (50mm) in May. So bring a raincoat, just in case!
I think May is easily one of the best months to visit Krakow, Poland. You won’t find huge crowds, the weather is fairly mild, and everything is green and blooming! May in Krakow is also a busy month for the city’s festival scene.
Some of the festivals that typically take place in May include the Krakow Film Festival, the Saint Stanislaw Procession, and Constitution Day. May is also the Krakow Photomonth, which is a month long photography festival.
Because it’s not necessarily ‘peak’ season for the city, you can typically find some pretty budget-friendly travel deals. I suggest starting to research your trip a few months ahead of time to find the absolute best deals. For so many reasons, Krakow is one of the best places to visit in Europe in May!
Brussels, Belgium
Average temperatures and precipitation: Brussels in May is typically fairly mild, with lows around 51°F (10°C) and highs around 66°F (19°C). While the temperatures are comfortable, you can expect a fair bit of rain in May in Brussels. On average, it rains 48% of the month of May. So pack your best raincoat and a pair of rain boots!
May is one of the best times to visit Brussels, Belgium – especially if you’re looking for a good deal. That’s because May is at the tail end of the ‘off season’ in Brussels. So the crowds and travel rates will be relatively low. Despite raining on average 48% of the time in May, it’s actually one of the drier months in the city.

While the weather in Europe in May is generally pretty mild, I suggest packing layers. The days may start out really chilly, but as the day goes on, get warm as the sun shines. Or vice versa! So I always suggest wearing light layers that you can easily remove and add, depending on the temperature.
Book Attractions Ahead Of Time
In May, a lot of European cities are starting to get into their ‘peak’ tourist season. For that reason, I suggest booking tickets for any popular attractions ahead of time. Its always a bummer when you are excited to see something, only to find out when you go that the tickets are all sold out. To avoid that heartbreak, book as many of your must-see attractions ahead of time as possible!
Research Public Holidays
In a lot of European countries, there are typically public holidays happening in May. This often means that some things are closed, in celebration of the holiday. If you have a small window of time to visit a certain place, research the public holidays ahead of time.
That way you can make sure you’ll have plenty of time to see everything you want to see, without worrying about if sites and attractions will be closed for a festive holiday!
