On day 1 of Edinburgh in 2 days, you will explore the most popular areas of the city including Old Town, Castle and more!
Stop 1: Breakfast and Arrival 8:30 am
One of the first things I do when visiting Edinburgh is grab breakfast. For those staying in Old Town, head to Deacon’s House Cafe! For those who are vegan, gluten free and vegetarian they have plenty of options!
This family-run cafe is the perfect spot to cozy up for coffee or tea and any of their homemade breakfast options. I am partial to the homemade scones. But the egg dishes and full Scottish breakfasts are equally as delicious.
Other Breakfast spots:
- The Edinburgh Ladder – All Scottish seasonal products used on Royal Mile
- The City Cafe – An American diner, all day breakfast
- Hideout Cafe Oldtown – coffee and treats
- The Milkman – pastries and coffee
Stop 2: Edinburgh Castle 9:30 am
A visit to Edinburgh Castle needs to be on your 2-day Edinburgh trip itinerary! A visit here will have you traveling back in time to the 11th century when the castle was first built during the Iron Age on castle rock (off an extinct volcano). Until the 1600s it was home to the British monarchs of Scotland!
As a history buff, the Castle has been involved in a myriad of conflicts and wars and is one of the oldest castles in Europe!

Insider Tips:

The menu does rotate, but, I would suggest trying any of the Scottish specials. There are vegetarian options on the menu as well! And don’t forget to try one of the 300 whiskeys served here!

Stop 3: Circus Lane 10:45 am
Stop 3, Circus Lane needs to be one of the things to see in Edinburgh in 2 days! While it is a bit of a walk from Dean Village, I think it is the most photogenic street (more like a back alley) in Edinburgh! Fun fact, it was the first curved cobblestone street in Edinburgh!
This is a great photo spot with an ivy-covered stone building with a church cock tower in the background!
Stop 4: Scott Monument 11:30 am
I think when planning a trip to Edinburgh, you want to see all the iconic sights, but, also need to explore all the quintessential Scottish landscapes. Located, in Princes Street Gardens, Scott Monument is the iconic Edinburgh monument.
Not only it is the largest monument dedicated to a writer ( Sir Walter Scott) it is also impressive architecturally. Take the 287 spiral stairs up to the viewing platform over the city ( so pretty!).

Stop 8: Walk across Waverley Bridge 5:45 pm
Day 2 has mostly been a walking tour on your 2-day weekend trip to Edinburgh, and it continues with walking across the Waverley Bridge. This bridge in the heart of Edinburgh links Market Street and Cockburn Street.
It is one of the 3 main routes linking Old and New Town and was built in 1984. For those arriving or departing by train, you will cross over Waverley Bridge to reach Waverley Train Station.
Stop 9: Cockburn Street 6:30 pm
Cockburn Street is my favorite of the “prettiest streets” in the old town of Edinburgh! It is pronounced “co-burn”! And is the perfect way to spend an afternoon with 2 days in Edinburgh Scotland.
This narrow street is an “s” shaped street that connects Royal Mile with Waverley Bridge with cobblestone and buildings on both sides. And for Harry Potter fans it is another inspiration for Diagon Alley!

Getting To And Around Edinburgh
You will either be arriving by plane (the airport is 7 miles from town), or by train. Getting into the city is very easy! For those arriving to the airport, you can take the city tram that runs every 7 minutes to town.
I recommend walking, the city is very walkable ( as Edinburgh is very compact ), and for further away things such as Princes Street, the public transit especially buses and trams are easy to use!
